I have attained a new certification from the Wine Scholar Guild called Bordeaux Master Level. This is great timing to support the upcoming French wine class at MiraCosta this fall, along with the planned Bordeaux wine class at MiraCosta (coming in 2021). Bring on the French wine!
How do you hold a wine party during a pandemic? Easy. Hire KutaSomm. Sylvia celebrated her birthday this week in Carlsbad, complete with curated wines, education, and entertainment. Everyone gathered outside by the spectacular fireplace, wore masks (except when eating or drinking), and sat 6 feet apart. The Mediterranean theme was chosen because the birthday girl was planning a trip to Greece after the pandemic ends. The party enjoyed wines from coastal Mediterranean regions including Languedoc (France), Provence (France), Jumilla (Spain), Basilicata (Italy), and Peloponnese (Greece). Happy Birthday Sylvia.
The Wine Ninjas strike Cardiff, Encinitas, and Carlsbad! The first session of the MiraCosta College Community Education course At-Home Blind Wine Tasting was a complete success. The Wine Ninjas fanned out across the North County Coastal area, providing home delivery services in a stealthy fashion. Did you see a wine ninja on your street? Some patrons opted for the pickup option, picking up a hand-made K-box (the ‘K’ stands for KutaSomm) to take home. More fun is in store in the coming weeks. Look out for the Wine Ninjas!
The Wine Ninjas are coming to MiraCosta College on Wed July 8th. What is a Wine Ninja? Well, there are four: The Professor, The Warrior, The Savant, and Wine Jesus. The Wine Ninjas will deliver wine to your front door, allowing you to enjoy the MiraCosta course At-Home Blind Wine Tasting from the comfort of your own couch. Throughout four sessions in July, you’ll experience the most engaging and entertaining blind wine tasting class on the planet. Reigster today by contacting MiraCosta College Community Education at 760-795-6820.
The Wine Ninja, this time two Ninjas, struck Del Mar again this past weekend. With this final test of the Wine Ninja concept, all the kinks have been worked out. The next Wine Ninja event will be a summertime virtual class at MiraCosta College. Do you want the Wine Ninja to visit your home? Then sign up for the class! Details coming soon.

Four wines were served at this virtual wine tasting (see photos). Opinions varied as to the favorite wine, but all wines received first place votes. My personal favorite was the 2015 Beringer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Beringer is an iconic Napa producer and one of the oldest wineries in Napa, founded by Frederick and Jacob Beringer in 1875. Their tagline is “California’s Oldest Continually Operating Winery.” Krug is older, but had a hiatus during Prohibition. Beringer survived (and operated continuously) by making sacrificial wine for religious purposes during the Prohibition years. Someone pulled out an issue of Wine Spectator magazine, which rated this wine at 90 points. If you can find it, try the 2015 Beringer Napa Valley Cabernet.
Special thanks to Bree and Megan for being tonight’s Wine Ninjas.
The first trial of virtual wine tasting was a success! I tasted with three Somms (only two shown in photo) while practicing social distancing. We all had the same wine, tasted at the same time, and shared our thoughts in a virtual meeting. What fun!
Due to the pandemic, MiraCosta has postponed the final session of Italian Wine, Art, and Culture. The final class will be held at a date and time to be determined. The wines are safely stored in the temperature-controlled KutaSomm wine cellar. Looking forward to getting back to teaching very soon. I hope all of my students remain safe during these trying times.
